tja was nun?

Rutsch in Richtung 0,6900

UBS: we bought EURGBP today

Mansoor Mohi-Uddin writing for UBS during early Europe:

The dollar has traded in a 1.2366-1.2390 range against the EUR and a 114.30-114.78 range against the JPY as the greenback stays under pressure in the wake of the G7 statement. We think investors should keep selling the rallies in the USD as we expect this week's US cyclical data to stay largely on the soft side. Today we have existing home sales and consumer confidence board data and our US economists are looking for lower than consensus prints for both data. We continue to see the EUR rising to 1.30 this quarter and the JPY to 108 as we outlined when we lowered our short term USD forecasts at the beginning of April. Our view is based on the Fed cycle peaking, central banks continuing to diversify out of the USD, global exchange rate policies becoming more conducive to USD weakness and concerns rising on Iran's nuclear power programme. The key risk to our view is that the Fed keeps tightening beyond May. Thus Fed Chairman Bernanke's testimony on Thursday will be crucial to determine whether the renewed weakness of the USD has further to run this month. Though the EUR has now broken out of seven month range, the JPY is still needs to clear its January highs around 113.50 to get the market to believe the USD is due for a broadly based move lower in the near term.

French business confidence came in firmer than consensus yesterday, jumping to 108 from 106, while German industrial production for February was reported up 1,0% against a 0.6% consensus and the prior month's weak -0.1% reading was revised into positive territory at +0.4%. With Bundesbank President Weber saying yesterday that further normalization in rates would likely be needed, we continue to see the ECB raising rates three more times this year. Overnight, ECB President Trichet said that central banks had to remain credible in the face of higher commodity prices. He also argued that exchange rates in emerging Asia and not just China had to adjust to help correct global imbalances. Thus is helping keep the EUR offered against the JPY and Asian currencies this week. But against the GBP and CHF we expect the EUR to stay strong on the crosses. Thus while yesterday's UK retail sales number was stronger than expected, EURGBP has stayed supported this week. We think next week's UK council elections will be an important indicator of when PM Blair will step down. If the ruling Labour Party does badly then pressure will increase for him to give way to Chancellor Brown. Given Blair's high standing with international investors if not currently with UK domestic voters, the GBP will underperform as a result. Thus we bought EURGBP today as a trade recommendation at 0.6930 with a stop at 0.6885 and a target of 0.7050.

Rabobank TA on Euro/GBP: A revisit of the YTD high at GBP 0.7020 seems likely
Technical Analyst Wouter Kallenberg writing for Rabobank from Netherlands:

Since November 2005 EUR GBP has slowly but surely worked its way towards higher levels. The daily bar chart shows the cross recently bounced off its 50-day moving average. This line often provides support on countertrend moves. As the pattern of higher peaks and troughs is still intact, a further advance towards the year-to-date high at GBP 0.7020 can be expected in the days ahead. A risk to our current bullish outlook would be a drop below the recent low at GBP 0.6890. This level coincides with the 50-day moving average thus adding credibility to this support. A drop below GBP 0.6890 would make a further decline likely towards a rising trendline at GBP 0.6840. In short, the countertrend move of EUR GBP has completed. A revisit of the YTD high at GBP 0.7020 seems likely.

Analyst Quotes on UK GDP
``There are clear signs of a move toward stronger growth, and plenty that gives grounds for the MPC to sit, wait and watch as stronger activity unfolds,'' said Allan Monks, an economist at JPMorgan in London, in an e-mailed note before the report.

``The Bank of England will be comforted by a report which shows a remarkable degree of balance in the economy with manufacturing reviving to contribute almost as much to growth as services,'' said Gavin Redknap, an economist at Standard Chartered Bank in London. ``It won't alter their inclination to leave rates on hold for now.''

"We still see lower rates later in the year, but for now, with the economy growing at about trend and in a balanced manner, there are few reasons for policy to be altered in either direction," said Gavin Redknap, economist at Standard Chartered Bank.

"The ongoing weakness of consumer spending is something we will have to get used to this year but for the moment at least there are other components of demand and output sectors that are filling the gap," said Geoffrey Dicks, economist at RBS.

Calyon Trade of The Day: Buy Euro/GBP
Calyon Trade of the Day: Buy EUR/GBP @ 0.6842, target 0.6910, stop loss 0.6808 Recent UK data releases have generally been robust, resulting in a sharp move in UK interest rate markets to the point where a 25bps rate hike is fully priced in for this year.We think this is unlikely and today’s BoE Quarterly Inflation Report is unlikely to validate expectations for further rate hikes. This could pose a significant risk to GBP given its stretched market positioning at present. GBP at risk amidst stretched market positioning

Michael Carey writing for Calyon from New York:

The markets fully expect a 25 bps rate hike by the FOMC today, raising the Fed funds target to 5%. The interest will be in textual changes that suggest that the Fed’s rate-hike cycle is over or on hold for a while. Chairman Bernanke got the ball rolling when he testified that “at some point in the future the Committee may decide to take no action at one or more meetings in the interest of allowing more time to receive information relevant to the outlook.” The Fed’s outlook is for growth to “moderate to a more sustainable pace” and given the lags with which policy affects the economy, we have argued that the Fed would likely stop at 5% to avoid “overshooting.” If the Fed’s outlook is correct, the near-term inflation figures may show some up-drift before turning lower as the economy slows. This would pose a crucial test of the FOMC’s communication skills as market participants might begin to worry that the Fed was “behind the curve.” Thus, we believe that the FOMC’s text will maintain the outlook for slower growth and note that energy and other commodity prices have had only a modest impact on core inflation. However, the statement may also stress that the committee will closely monitor and is prepared to respond to incoming data on resource utilization and elevated prices for energy and other commodities that do not conform to the Fed’s outlook for a moderation in growth with contained inflation. This would convey the inflation vigilance that one expects from a central bank and give the FOMC the flexibility to respond to changes in economic prospects as needed. The challenge for market participants will be to assess the choppy economic data for signs that the moderation in growth expected this quarter will be sustained.

Bank of England Voted 6-2 to Leave Rate Unchanged

May 17 (Bloomberg) - The Bank of England's policy-making committee voted 6-2 to keep the benchmark interest rate unchanged at 4.5 percent this month, with David Walton voting for an increase and Stephen Nickell backing a reduction.

Walton's vote for an increase was the first for a year, whereas Nickell voted for a sixth straight month to cut borrowing costs, according to the minutes of the May 3-4 meeting released in London today. It was the first time the committee was split this way since August 1998, the bank said...

... ``On balance, most members felt there was no need to stimulate demand at this time given the signs of a pickup in growth and the near-term risks to inflation from higher energy prices,'' the minutes said. ``Equally there appeared to be no pressing need to tighten policy given the continued weakness of domestically generated inflation.''...
