Europe Political Woes Weighing On EUR/USD
Looks like concerns about European politics having some
impact on EUR/USD with articles in various papers (Wall Street Journal, one in
UK Times titled "Europe and its leaders in turmoil") adding to negative
sentiment, say traders; Italy parliament seems headed toward unprecedented
split between conservative coalition headed by Premier Berlusconi, one led by
center-left challenger Prodi - result that may stall formation of new
government, lead to political instability. Traders report little interest in
EUR/USD at current levels around 1.2100. Technically, pair trapped between
hourly support at 1.2077 and resistance at 1.2131; medium term buying interest
expected at 1.2050-60

Option

Implied volatility in EUR/USD, USD/JPY and AUD/USD is
lower across the curve, says Citigroup. Says 1 week volatility is down the
hardest due to the long Easter weekend affecting the number of trading days.
Adds USD/JPY front-end risk reversals are bid as spot moves higher, but the
back end is stable at 1.05 for USD puts.

10:00 CET EUR/USD Capped By 1.2150 Option Barrier For Now

10:53 CET A "very large" EUR/USD 1.2050 barrier, with expiry
Tuesday, will "act as a magnet," say Bank of America. There is little
volatility flow going through, but some selling is seen in 2 week 1.20 strikes
in EUR400M at 7.50, BoA says. Adds implied volatility has moved lower on the
back of the spot move to the 1.2100 area. Spot now at 1.2128. (JSE)

Rumor

Beitrag von X-Market »

3:00 CET Rumor Asian central banks bidding for EUR/USD at 1.2100,
Singapore dealers say; add sizable buy stop-loss orders lined up at 1.2175/80.

04:47 CET Modest EUR/USD selling interest after failed push higher
earlier today being soaked up by early European buyers around 1.2160, says
European bank trader in HK. Speculation of another high U.S. trade gap and
rebuilding of EUR longs following Trichet's speech Thursday driving interest.

Trading Floor: Key resistance at 1.2175
SHORT at 1.2165 with targets at 1.2123 and 1.2112.
Alternative scenario: A penetration of 1.2175 would trigger a bullish
acceleration towards 1.2205 and 1.2236.
(07:52 CET)

11:00 CET Rumor : the deficit will narrow by more than expected to 65 bln usd. The sharp drop in China's trade surplus during February, strength in
Boeing Co aircraft shipments and a relatively stable energy import bill suggests
"scope for a considerable dollar positive surprise".
Away from the trade data, the dollar has been weighed down this morning by
continued high commodity prices and the news that Iran has apparently
successfully enriched uranium for use as nuclear fuel.

On the latter Iran's declaration is likely to raise risk aversion "which is likely to prove a negative for the dollar on position unwinding".

Though the market is expecting the trade gap to narrow slightly to 67.5 bln
usd from 68.5 bln in January, there are worries that it could be worse.
Even if it comes in lower than forecast, a number of analysts doubt it will
give the dollar much respite.
"The narrowing trade deficit is not expected to give much sustained support
for the dollar over the near term, given evolving expectations for interest rate
differentials and little chance of a significant move to correct international
trade imbalances this year,"

10:40 CET. A 6 month EUR/USD 1.1400/1.2500 double-no-touch option
was given at 15% . Adds it sees interest in
short-dated volatility as well as interest in risk reversals to buy EUR calls
ahead of US trade balance numbers. "The market seems to get nervous whenever
the EUR moves higher, and we think that this will prevent volatility from
moving lower in the next 24 hours," says Bank of America. EUR/USD now at
1.2148.

EUR/USD – The euro gained slightly against the greenback, trading through its 20 day SMA and 23.6% fibo of the recent 1.2331-1.2076 decline at 1.2136. The confluence of the 38.2% of the same move / 10 day SMA waits at 1.2170/73. Daily oscillator action remains slightly bullish with positive 14 day momentum increasing and RSI above 50 and also rising. Still visible of course is the often mentioned inverse head and shoulders from May 2005 of which a close a below 1.1825 is required to completely dismiss the pattern and its bullish implications. The 3/17 high / former breakout at 1.2207 presents potential resistance with a break ultimately targeting the zone bound by the 4/6 high / 38.2% fibo of 1.3478-1.1637 at 1.2332/40. Pullbacks from the early week gains give scope to the 61.8% fibo of 1.1951-1.2331 at 1.2096 with additional weakness probing the 76.4% fibo / 200 day SMA at 1.2040/50.

April 17, 2006 07:30 ET (11:30 GMT)
FX OPTION VIEWS:
EUR/USD also provides opportunities to profit from increasing realized vols.
The one-month implied vol shed 0.80 percentage point during the pre-Easter vol
selloff and now trades 7.65%, 1.74 vols below one-month actual volatility.
Buying this gamma from these discounted levels is appealing, both outright
and as a spread to express a directional view. CommentaryPlus has suggested
euro bulls look to EUR call spreads and reverse-knockout EUR calls/USD puts.
These trades buy ATMF vol and sell the more expensive wing vol.
Risk-reversal pricing, where one-month 25-delta EUR calls trade 0.27 vol
above the EUR puts, suggests value in selling the high strikes or being short
triggers above the market as a play on a moderate EUR/USD recovery. (See the
chart of EUR/USD one-month implied vols vs the one-month risk-reversal spread
over the past two years.)
A three-month 1.2170 EUR call with a reverse knockout at 1.2600 had a
theoretical value of 24 USD pips Friday off a 1.2100 spot (it's 1.2168 now), vs
195 USD pips for the vanilla EUR call. Moving the trigger to 1.2700 increases
the theoretical value to 42 USD pips. A 1:2 ratio EUR call spread - buying the
ATMF and selling two 25-delta (1.2535) EUR calls - shows a premium of 43 USD
pips (vols of 8.20% and 8.45%).

@oegeat
